LIMERICK’S first fully inclusive playground has officially opened in the heart of the city.
People’s Park is the location of this state-of-the-art play area and it was a hive of activity this Monday as local school-goers got to experience it for the first time.
Commenting at the officially opening, Carmel Lynch, Senior Executive Engineer and Head of Parks at Limerick City and County Council said. “The old playground was in existence for 20 years and was in much need of an upgrade and one of the requirements for the brief for the project was that we wanted to make sure that the playground was fully inclusive for all children of all ages and abilities."
“This is the first one in Limerick and the contractor that designed the playground, Garden Escapes, they really understood the brief very well and provided a good number of playground pieces of equipment that would ensure that there was inclusivity at the heart of play here in the playground.”
The playground, which was upgraded over the summer, was officially opened by the Deputy Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Councillor Dan McSweeney (pictured).

The park includes a ground level trampoline which wheelchair users can use, basket swings, sand pits and a wide slide where carers can join children.
Separately, work on a second fully inclusive playground began at O'Brien's Park in the city this Monday.
