THE Children's Grief Centre officially opened after a €3.5m investment at the John Henry Newman Campus at Mary Immaculate College.
Located on O'Connell Avenue, the state-of-the-art facility has dedicated rooms specifically designed for four to nine-year-olds; six to 12-year-olds and teens up to 18 years; a library, two adult support rooms, a conference room and six staff offices. Outside, an interactive sensory garden offers children an opportunity to communicate with the natural world.
Speaking at the event, Sr.Helen Culhane said: "it's amazing really to see it at this stage of development but it's also very exciting, as you can see there's a wonderful atmosphere".
Sr.Helen founded the Children's Grief Centre in 2009 in two rooms and with the assistance of a Board of Management, volunteers and local support
"What we provide is a support service, a listening ear, some people get confused, it's not a counselling service but from my experience children don't need counselling but what they are looking for is someone to listen, so we work with children between four and eighteen where parents have separated, divorced or bereaved," she added.
Minister for Education, Norma Foley, was in attendance to officially open the venue.
