NEWCOMER Peter Doyle of Fine Gael has been elected in the first count.
The newly elected councillor nabbed seat number two in the Limerick City East constituency and says he it was thanks to“extremely hard work” following his election.
The first-timer got 1,727 votes, making the quota in the first count.
“I'm delighted,” Cllr Doyle said.
“Great result for the parish and the team that helped me and the great support I got from Kieran O'Donnell and the team that helped me.
“We worked hard since last November and canvassed extremely hard. The hard work came to pass.”
The food business manager has proved popular in the Limerick City East district and in a surprising turn of events, overtook Cllr Sarah Kiely, who was looking to have strong figures all day.
Cllr Doyle, who lives in Castletroy, says his priorities are getting a garda station for Castletroy, better facilities in local areas like community centres and libraries and revitalising Limerick city.
Two candidates were elected in the first count. The count was adjourned for the night after 1am.
