Narrow escape as car bursts into flames outside Limerick senior hurling match

'I thought it was going to explode' - eye witness

A CAR burst into flames as hurling supporters were streaming out of Bruff GAA grounds on Friday evening.

Fans were making their way home after watching Kilmallock’s narrow defeat of Mungret St Paul’s in the second round of the Limerick senior hurling championship when the drama unfolded.

One eye witness who sent the video (above) to Limerick Live said there was nothing malicious about it.

“It appears a lady started her car and smoke just started billowing out of it. Thankfully she was able to get out and get to a safe distance. I thought it was going to explode. It went up so fast.

“I had just come out of the match. I got to my car just in time.

"Luckily, there were no fans beside the car when the fire started. It was scary as you didn’t know what was going to happen,” they told Limerick Live.

Kilmallock Fire and Rescue Service were on the scene within minutes, quickly quenched the blaze and made the area safe. It is not known how the fire started.
