Gardai make 37 arrests in one day in Limerick during targeted 'day of action'

Around 100 personnel descended on Askeaton, Pallaskenry and Foynes shortly after dawn

A CONVOY of vehicles containing around 100 personnel rolled out of Rathkeale shortly after dawn and headed for Askeaton, Pallaskenry as part of a garda-led multi-agency day of action.

It follows similar recent targeted operations in Newcastle West, Abbeyfeale, Kilmallock and Rathkeale.

The operation involved over forty members from Limerick County Community Engagement Area, the Limerick Crime Functional Area (inclusive of Immigration Officers), Limerick Divisional Roads Policing Unit and the Regional Armed Support Unit.

A garda spokesperson said to maximise impact, a multi-agency approach was adopted and the operation was conducted with support from Customs and Revenue, Department of Social Protection, National Parks & Wildlife Service, Road Safety Authority and Limerick City and County Council (Dog Warden).

"Ten multi agency checkpoints were conducted resulting in the seizure of two vehicles for various offences. A number of other roadside detections were made by the RSA, DSP and Revenue Customs.

"Thirty five persons were arrested on foot of outstanding bench warrants. All persons were brought before Newcastle West Court and were bailed to subsequent sittings appropriate to their warrants in the coming weeks.

"Two further arrests were made for driving offences. One driver has been charged to appear before the courts at a later date and the other driver was released pending file to the DPP," said a garda spokesperson.

Active beat patrols were carried out in Askeaton and Pallaskenry with a focus on community engagement. HGV compliance checks were carried out at Foynes Port.

Dog wardens from Limerick City and County Council conducted their own enquiries and patrols locally with assistance from Gardaí.

The operation in the west of the county lasted for a total of 10 hours on Tuesday following weeks of planning by gardai in County Limerick and engagement with other State agencies.
