WATCH: Iconic Limerick band with lasting legacy named as Persons of the Month

St John's Brass and Reed Band honoured with Limerick Persons of the Month award for 160 years of music making in the city

THE ST John’s Brass and Reed Band has been named Limerick Persons of the Month, marking an extraordinary milestone of 160 years of continuous music-making in the city.

The award recognises the band's longstanding cultural contribution and its enduring presence in community life since its founding in 1865.

To celebrate the anniversary, a public event took place on Saturday, May 17, featuring a ceremonial march from the Band Hall on Garryowen Road to John’s Square.

The event included a free concert and exhibition at the historic Old St. John’s Church, under the direction of Dr Andrew Jordan.

The exhibition, which showcases memorabilia, photographs, instruments, and uniforms from the band’s history, will be moved to St Mary’s Cathedral for Heritage Week in August, allowing further public access.

Founded originally as The Victuallers Band by Limerick’s butchers’ guild, St John’s Brass and Reed Band is one of Ireland’s oldest community bands.

Today, it includes 30 members ranging in age from 17 to their 70s, with diverse cultural backgrounds. The band rehearses weekly at the Redemptorist Centre of Music, which continues to support its development.

Reflecting on the award, Dr Andrew Jordan said: “It’s our 160th year, so this award represents not just the members that are here this year, but all members that have been in the band over the last number of years. It’s a real honour.”

Tony, a long-time member from Mulgrave Street, added: “As a non-profit, community-based organisation with charity status, we have always had a vision and commitment to Limerick’s cultural development. It is a great social activity too and I have made great friends.”

The anniversary concert drew large crowds and featured appearances by Cllr. Kieran O’Hanlon, Dr. Matthew Potter of Limerick Museum, and Dr. Derek Mulcahy of Mary Immaculate College, who spoke on the band’s historical and cultural importance.

St John’s Brass and Reed Band remains a central part of Limerick’s musical identity, performing regularly at civic events, including the International Band Festival and St Patrick’s Day parades.

Representatives of the band will proceed to the Limerick Person of the Year ceremony, where the coveted award will be presented to one of the 12 Person of the Month recipients.

Limerick Person of the Month is sponsored by the Limerick Leader, Southern Media and the Clayton Hotel.
