'I am absolutely thrilled,' says Sharlene Mawdsley after incredible race in Tokyo to reach the semi-finals at the World Athletics Championships

Sharlene Mawdsley qualified on Sunday afternoon for the World Athletics Championships women's 400m semi-finals.

The Newport sprinter ran in lane nine in her heat and put in a huge performance in a stacked field to reach the semi-final as one of the non-automatic qualifiers.

The fourth place finish for Sharlene Mawdsley in the third of the 400m heats meant the Newport AC athlete went through to the semi-final as one of the fastest non-automatic qualifiers with a time of 51.04.

Sharlene mentioned her late father Thomas "Tucker" Mawdsley - who passed away tragically earlier this year - as she asked him for help from the Heavens as she was waiting to hear if she qualified for the semi-finals.

Mawdsley will be back for the semi-final on Tuesday afternoon.
