Offaly hurling icon Johnny Flaherty passed away on Wednesday after a short battle with illness

Offaly is mourning the death of a hurling great today after the death was announced of All-Ireland winner Johnny Flaherty.

Flaherty died on Wednesday morning after a reasonably short battle with illness but is being remembered as a gentleman and an asceptional hurler who played a major role in Offaly's 1981 All-Ireland win over Galway. his hurling exploits.

His late hand passed goal spearheaded the county to victory in the 1981 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship final against Galway.
