The successful rescue operation took up to four hours on Sunday at Oxmantown Mall in Birr

A four-hour operation to rescue a Bernese Mountain Dog which fell down a deep well was carried out in Offaly on Sunday.

The owner contacted emergency services for support after realising the dog was missing whilst they were out for a walk.

The three-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog named Bru had fallen into the well which was around 30 feet deep and four feet wide but didn’t contain any water. The well is located close to the gated entrance to Birr Castle.

They were assisted by a special team from Laois County Fire and Rescue Service with over around 25 firefighters involved altogether across the two services.
