There is a dark cloud over Galway GAA this week after the sudden and untimely death of a club legend.
St. Mary’s GAA club Athenry issued a heartbreaking statement confirming the death of Billy Caulfield on Tuesday.
Remembered as a ”loyal club legend and supporter of all things maroon and white”, Billy was heavily involved in Athenry’s GAA teams as a player, mentor, manager, club officer and supporter.
The club said: “Unfortunately, we were devastated to learn of the sudden passing of our club Legend and dear friend Billy Caulfield.
“Few things outside of family, brought more joy to Billy than seeing our club participating and succeeding on the hurling fields. Billy’s gentlemanly character, infectious smile and laugh and huge presence will be sorely missed around our club and the playing fields of Galway.
“A more detailed tribute will follow in due course. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
A book of condolences is open at the St Mary's GAA clubhouse in Carnaun.
Athenry Camogie club also paid tribute saying: “Athenry Camogie Club is heartbroken to learn of the sudden passing of Billy Caulfield. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Carmel, his children Jacqueline, Conor and Stephen, and the extended Caulfield family at this incredibly difficult time.
“To his sporting family in St. Mary's GAA Club Athenry, we are thinking of you all. As a player, mentor, manager and club officer, Billy wore the colours of his beloved St Mary's with immense pride.
