It is feared that the culprits may strike again unless something is done immediately

These are the ‘despicable’ scenes as one local councillor called it that Galway residents have had to put up with for four nights on the trot.

Fine Gael Councillor for North Galway Ollie Turner has called the four night spate of vandalism “absolutely shocking” as bollards and plants were removed or destroyed on the outskirts of Dunmore.

Now, local gardai in Tuam have gotten involved with Councillor Turner hoping this can stop the horrible acts once and for all and better still catch whoever is behind it.

He said: “For the fourth night in a row, there was overnight vandalism at Kiltevna cross, Gortnaleam cross and the Bellwell junction, which was a road safety project funded by the Department of Transport.

“All plants were removed, with bollards taken up and discarded with a great degree of effort, and the stop sign twisted in the wrong direction. What the person or persons involved in this think they are achieving is anyone's guess, but if you have an information please call Tuam Garda Station on 093 70840.”

He added: "It's absolutely shocking. It's despicable behavior. This has gone on now for a couple of nights in a row. I really hope that people can assist the Tuam Gardaí in getting to the bottom of this, and that culprits have to recognize that this will not be tolerated."

You can contact Tuam Garda Station on 093 70840.

Elsewhere, gardai are also investigating an incident of burglary at a Galway business.

Athenry officers are appealing for witnesses after the incident at ESB Station where entry was gained to the site by cutting the gate’s locks.

Large quantity of copper cables were robbed from the site with anyone with information being asked to contact Galway Garda Station on 091-538000 or the Garda Confidential line on 1800666111.

Garda Joe Quinn also warned members of the public about sophisticated fraud schemes which have caught out Galway people in the past few weeks.

He said: “There have been several reports made to Galway Garda Station regarding damage done to park benches and fences in the Merlin Woods area on the 9th, 10th and 12th of October. The park benches have been damaged by fire and some fencing removed in the area.

“Galway Gardai are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area or around the Merlin Woods area and observed any suspicious activity to contact Galway Garda Station on 091-538000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800666111 or any Garda Station.”

He added: “Gardai at Millstreet Garda Station are investigating the theft of items from a car parked in the College Road area between Tuesday the October 6 at 9pm to Wednesday October 7 at 9am.

“This vehicle was a Grey Mazda and damage was done to the driver’s door and the centre consol. Anyone who may have been in the area during this period and observed any suspicious activity to contact Galway Garda Station on 091-538000 or the Garda confidential line on 1800666111.”

An Garda Siochana is also urging people to be wary of text alleging to be from Bank of Ireland, Allied Irish Bank, An Post, Revolut or PTSB or any text message asking for personal details and bank details. A legitimate bank will never text, email, or call you asking for your personal details such as your pin, password, or full card details.

Garda Quinn finished by saying: “A recent report outlines an injured party receiving a google meets online request, the request was accepted, and communication was made by phone.

“The caller alleged that they were from Revolut and that there was a problem with the injured party’s account and their card needed to be frozen.

“Caller outlined that a new card needed to be ordered and requested the personal details. Once the details had been provided several transactions were made on this account.”
