Galway housing development approved after seven year wait

It had been refused planning three times
A Galway housing development has finally gotten approval after a seven year wait including three rejections.
The plans for the 56 homes in Briarhill have been on and off since 2019 with An Coimisiun Pleanala finally granting developer Martin Coyne the go ahead this week.
Situated beside the local National School heading for Monivea on the R339, the plans include a mix of two, three and four bedroom apartments as well as apartments and duplexes.
Plans were submitted to Galway County Council initially in 2019 followed by 2020 which led to two refusals and again in 2025 where it was met with a third rejection.
The third refusal was appealed by the Developer and taken to the Coimisiun who gave it the all clear attaching 21 conditions to abide by in the alterations.
In other planning news, a Galway school has welcomed what they call “fantastic news” after a long wait as plans for their major sports development were granted.
Planning permission for a new eight lane Athletics Track and All-Weather football pitch on the grounds of Coláiste Bhaile Chláir have been given the green light in collaboration with Clare River Harriers Athletics Club and Cregmore Claregalway F.C.
The school said the development is a huge investment in the future of sport in the area and for future pupils, not only benefitting their school but also surrounding primary schools in the locality who will be allowed access.
Out of school hours, the facilities will be used by the above clubs for training, matches and running events.
A spokesperson for the school said: “This is a significant milestone for our school and community, and we look forward to seeing this exciting project come to life in the years ahead. Thank you to everyone who has supported and championed this vision.
