It will be closed off for ten hours each night

A stretch of the motorway road for Galway will be closed to drivers for ten hours each across two nights next week.

The M17 northbound from Junction 19 Annagh Hill to Junction 20 Tuam will be closed from 8pm to 6am on Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 September with diversions in place via the R354 and N83.

Transport Infrastructure for Ireland has confirmed they will be carrying out maintenance works on the road which is expected to be finished next Wednesday morning.

There will be staff in place to direct traffic throughout the closure and for access if needed in the case of emergencies.

A spokesperson for Galway County Council said: “Please be advised that Direct Route Tuam, on behalf of Transport Infrastructure Ireland, will be carrying out maintenance works on the M17 Northbound carriageway between Junction 19 Annagh hill and Junction 20 Tuam.

“To facilitate these works, the motorway will be closed nightly from 8pm to 6am.

“The closure points will be staffed throughout the duration of the works to allow access for emergency services if required. Please note that all works are weather-dependent.”

Met Eireann says that it will remain likely unsettled next Monday and Tuesday while these works are ongoing with further rain and showers which could disrupt works if persistent.

Here’s how the rest of this week is looking according to Met Eireann:

Wednesday will begin damp or wet, with heavy overnight rain moving off into the Irish Sea. While the rain will ease, patchy drizzle will follow from the west. Drizzle will turn heavy at times across the Northwest and along south and west coasts. However, warm sunny spells will break through across parts of the Midlands, East and Southeast too. Very mild and humid in a moderate southwest breeze, with highest temperatures of 17 to 23 degrees.

Thursday: “Mainly dry to start with sunny spells and just well scattered showers. Outbreaks of rain will move in from the west through the afternoon, likely extending to most areas by the evening. Highest temperatures of 16 to 21 degrees with moderate to fresh west to southwest winds, strong at times near coasts.”

Friday: “A drier day for most with sunny spells and scattered showers, mainly affecting the north and northwest. Highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees with moderate to fresh westerly winds.”
