Landmark returns to Galway area after 60 years gone

It has been gone from the area since the 1960s
An iconic landmark has returned to one Galway area after 60 years.
It has been a long wait for the people of Cleggan but after six decades they have their lamp back on the Pier.
The Victorian Oil Lamp had been on the Pier up until the early 1960s and provided the only light there before electricity.
However, the original lamp was damaged badly in a severe storm and as a result was not restored or replaced - until now.
Cleggan Tidy Towns said: “We located a lamp exactly the same as the original.
“It was previously located in the grounds of Áras an Uachtaráin but removed as it was in poor condition.
“However, local Cleggan experts restored it, fitted a solar light and put it back on the pier in its original location.”
The Committee added: “The project would not have been possible without the help of James Flanagan, the Lamplighter of Phoenix Park who found the lamp for us.
“Tommy and Terry led the restoration with help from Ben, Darren and John and Cathal gave practical advice on securing it.
“We are very grateful for this local support. Thanks also to Galway County Council who funded the restoration with a heritage grant.”
