Punters looking for Galway Arts Festival tickets are being advised to check out the music programme, as the theatre shows are practically sold out. That’s according to Festival CEO John Crumlish.

“Practically all the theatre shows are sold out. There are tickets left for one show of Love, Love, Love and a few tickets for Richard III. Silent is gone, Request Programme is gone and Controlled Falling Project is gone. And Misterman is practically gone. We are down to music and particularly the Big Top,” he says.

There are still plenty of tickets left for the crosscultural AfroCubism concert on Monday next July 19 in the Big Top, and that’s also the case for the concert from hip-hop group De La Soul and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble on July 23. Blondie, on July 20, is moving well, but there are tickets available.

Those interested in the classical programme also have time to get tickets, as there are some available for most of those concerts. For those who failed to get seats for theatre shows, the best bet is to hope for returns.

“A mouth-watering two weeks of the very best of art from all over the world”, was the promise from Arts Festival Director Paul Fahy at the offical opening of this year’s Festival in the Radisson Blu Hotel yesterday (Monday) evening.

The event was officially opened by Pat Moylan, Chairman of the Arts Council, who praised it as “the most persuasive voice for the arts in Galway City, as it develops its cultural infrastructure and networks”.

Several of the artists taking part attended the event including Misterman star Cillian Murphy and the play's writer and director Enda Walsh, who briefly popped in before returning to the Black Box Theatre for the world premiere of the play.
