Ada Niland
Mayo Abbey
Ada Niland, Mayo Abbey. THE death took place recently of Ada Niland, Currykirwan, Mayo Abbey. She died peacefully at the residence of her daughter Marion and son-in-law Mattie Concannon at Carrowpadden, Dunmore. Ada, who was in her mid-80s, had been in declining health for sometime.
Formerly Nally from Kilbride, Mayo Abbey, she was a sister of the of the late Bob, Joe and James Nally. She was also predeceased by her husband John, who died in 1958 when the children were very young. Ada had to shoulder another heavy cross in 1977 when her only son Noel died at the age of 26.
Raising a young family was a formidable challenge, yet Ada spared no effort in ensuring the very best for her family. She worked exceptionally hard, taking care of the land and the home, and passing on to them the values handed down through the generations.
A pioneer all her life, she was the recipient of a gold pin some years ago. Ada was always happy and content in the family home and was never one for “going out”. She was blessed with good neighbours and enjoyed visiting the Sloyans, Walshs’ and Fallons’ and others, and having them come over to visit her.
She loved to meet the neighbours and there was always a hearty welcome for all visitors to the Niland home. Ada excelled at baking and was well known for the brown bread and the beautiful apple tarts. The kettle was always on the boil and no one was left in any doubt as to the hospitality extended by Ada to all callers.
A woman of strong faith, she attended Mass faithfully each Sunday morning, travelling with her son-in-law Jarlath Prendergast to Mayo Abbey Church. She had her own circle of friends that she met after Mass and who were such a part of her weekly life.
Ada was a firm favourite in the local community and she will be sadly missed by her devoted family and many good friends.
Removal took place from the Balla Funeral Home to Mayo Abbey Church with burial in the local cemetery following Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr Austin Fergus, PP. The PTAA (pioneer) flag was draped on her coffin during the funeral Mass.
She is survived by her daughters Marion Concannon (Dunmore), Bonnie Connolly (Castlebar) and Carmel Prendergast (Currykirwan), sons-in-law Mattie and Jarlath (her other son-in-law Joe Connolly died two years ago), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. - MC.
