Independent councillor says children with Type 1 Diabetes and their families need certainty over vital support service

Mayo County Councillor Harry Barrett has called on the Government and the HSE to immediately replace the Paediatric Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist at Mayo University Hospital, warning that families cannot be left facing uncertainty over a service they depend on.

Cllr Barrett confirmed that he has written to the Minister for Health seeking urgent action to ensure the specialist post is filled without delay.

The councillor said families of children living with Type 1 Diabetes have told him the service provides essential support in managing what is a complex and life-changing condition.

“Children with Type 1 Diabetes in Mayo deserve certainty, not uncertainty,” he said.

“I have written to the Minister for Health calling for the immediate replacement of the Paediatric Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist at Mayo University Hospital.”

Cllr Barrett described the role as essential for families navigating the daily challenges associated with diabetes management, including monitoring blood glucose levels, administering insulin and responding to medical emergencies.

“Parents have told me this service is a lifeline for families managing a complex and life-changing condition. We cannot allow children and their parents to be left wondering if the support they rely on will still be there tomorrow,” he said.

He urged the HSE to act swiftly to maintain continuity of care for young patients across the county.

“The HSE must act now and ensure this vital post is filled without delay,” he added.

The call comes amid ongoing concerns nationally regarding staffing levels across specialist healthcare services and the impact vacancies can have on patient care and family supports.
