Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht Dara Calleary has welcomed confirmation that more than 6,300 homes have been brought back into active use through €348.6 million in Vacant Property Refurbishment Grants.

A total of 14,377 applications for the grant have been approved since the scheme began in July 2022, according to new statistics released today. A total 6, 312 grant payments have already been issued on completion of works.

“The Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant Scheme is working very well with Mayo having now completed 238 applications with over €13 million paid out in grant funding. In Q2 of this year alone 48 new applications have been submitted, 62 applications have been approved and 16 grants totalling €932,244 have been issued upon completion of projects.

Minister Calleary continued: “Six previously vacant properties are being brought back into active use every working day across Ireland and it is fantastic to see previously vacant properties being brought back into life.

“This Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant is proving to be a highly effective measure. It gives people support to refurbish properties that might otherwise have remained empty.

Minister Browne wants to encourage this and I as a Mayo public representative want to highlight the success of the scheme and to encourage others to submit applications. We have a strong record of applications, 1061 since the scheme opened, with 800 approved and 238 completed homes coming back into use in the county as well as the economic benefit of over €13 million being spent locally in the refurbishment process.”
