Community-led initiative will give adults in Erris the chance to learn sewing, baking, woodturning and gardening skills

A new free community education programme in Erris will offer adults the opportunity to learn practical skills, meet new people and share their knowledge with others in the community.

Erris Family and Community Support Centre, supported by Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim Education and Training Board (MSLETB), is launching the Erris Skills Share Community Education Programme, a six-week initiative beginning on Monday, November 2.

The programme will run every Monday from 6pm to 8.30pm until December 7, with a series of beginner-friendly taster workshops led by local people and community groups.

Open to everyone aged 18 and over, the programme requires no previous experience and is designed to encourage participants to try something new in a welcoming environment.

The workshops will cover a range of practical skills, including sewing, baking, woodturning, clothes repair and gardening.

Participants will have the opportunity to make their own pincushion during a sewing workshop with Atty Gaughan, while Nessa from Butty’s Kitchen will lead a baking session combining food and fun.

The Erris Men’s Shed will introduce participants to woodturning, while John from JP Sewing will demonstrate the basics of mending and repairing clothes.

A spring bulb planting workshop will be led by Béal an Mhuirthead Tidy Towns, known as Baile Slachtmhar Bhéal an Mhuirthead, offering participants the chance to develop their gardening skills.

All materials will be provided, along with light refreshments. Venues will vary from week to week.

Organisers say the initiative aims to bring people together through shared learning, helping participants develop useful everyday skills while strengthening connections within the community.

Places are limited, and advance booking is essential.

To register or express an interest in sharing a skill with the community, contact Brandon at Erris Family and Community Support Centre on 087 457 9658 or email [email protected].
