Southeast London’s Tongue & Groove choir will join forces with Westport Town Hall Choir for a free day of music, culminating in a special performance at McCarthy’s Bar

Music lovers in Westport are in for a treat later this month as members of the London-based community choir Tongue & Groove prepare to bring a day of pop classics, musical theatre favourites and spontaneous performances to the town.

The acclaimed choir from Southeast London will visit Westport on Saturday, June 27, offering a series of free pop-up performances at locations throughout the town before joining forces with the local Town Hall Choir for a special evening event.

Visitors and locals can expect surprise musical performances during the afternoon as the choir makes its way through some of Westport’s best-known streets and public spaces, creating a lively atmosphere in the heart of the town.

The musical trail will conclude with a special performance at McCarthy’s Bar from 5.30pm to 7pm, where Tongue & Groove will be joined by members of the Westport Town Hall Choir for what organisers describe as a celebration of music, community and cultural exchange.

The event is free to attend, with audiences encouraged to sing along and take part in the fun.

Robin Thompson, a founder member of Tongue & Groove, said the group is excited to visit Mayo and connect with local singers.

“We can’t wait to swap the Tube for the Wild Atlantic Way,” he said. “We are so looking forward to meeting members of Westport’s own Town Hall Choir to share our love of singing and build some wonderful musical connections.”

Founded in 2017, Tongue & Groove has built a reputation for its inclusive approach to community singing. The choir’s diverse repertoire spans classic pop, rock and musical theatre, featuring songs by artists including Bonnie Tyler, Pet Shop Boys, Queen, Nick Cave and Madonna.

The visit promises to add a vibrant soundtrack to a summer weekend in Westport, with organisers hoping the performances will encourage community participation and showcase the unifying power of music.

All events are open to the public and suitable for all ages.
