Mamie Conroy
Clare and Ballyburke
The death has taken place in Co Clare of Mamie Conroy, who was a native of Ballyburke, Ayle. Affectionately known as Maisie, she was daughter of the late Bridgie and Pa Gavin (builder) of Ballyburke.
After completing her education in Ballyburke NS, Maisie emigrated to England at the tender age of 16 years. She worked in London for some time with Jacobs Manufacturing. While in England she married Clare native Paddy Conroy. Maisie’s interesting journey from the rural village of Ballyburke to the busy English city and back to Co Clare was interwoven with many nostalgic stories. Many of these stories were sweetened by her wonderful sense of wit and charm.
She was renowned for her hospitality. For those who crossed the threshold into her home there was always a welcoming cup of tea and refreshments.
Her life revolved around people and she loved the occasion when people came to visit her or when she went to visit others. As a wife, mother and friend she was imbued with many fine and beautiful qualities which touched the lives of those she met on life’s journey
She was waked in her home in Slaughty. Her funeral took place from St Mary’s Funeral Home to Looscaun Church.
During her Requiem Mass, celebrated by Fr. Kieran O’Rourke, the first reading was read by her niece, Mary Conway, Druminroe, Partry. The second reading was read by another niece, Caitriona Gavin, Coventry. The Responsorial Psalm was sung by her grandchildren, Paul and Fiona Conroy. The Prayers of the Faithful were prayed by Aine, Claire and Thomas Conroy and Carol Cullen of Birmingham. The offertory gifts were carried to the altar by her granddaughter, Caroline. The Post-Communion reflection was sung by Maisie’s granddaughter, Fiona.
Before her funeral left the church the recessional hymn ‘The Note’ was sung by her grandson, Paul.
Maisie. who was laid to rest in Douras Cemetery, is survived by her son, Paul, daughter in law, Josephine, who cared for her with great kindness throughout her illness; grandchildren, Paul, Caroline and Fiona of Slaughty, Coose North, Whitegate, Co Clare; nieces, nephews and cousins and her many other relatives and friends to whom we extend our sincerest sympathies. May her gentle soul rest in peace.
