Mary Jo Duffy
Myna, Kilmeena
The death took place suddenly at her home of Mary Josephine Duffy, Myna, Kilmeena, Westport on May 27, 2010. Mary Jo was 47 years old and was the only daughter of the late Jack and Josephine Duffy.
Mary Jo Duffy was one of the best loved personalities in the communty. Mary Jo’s early education took her to St Brendan’s National School, Myna, boarding school in Balla and Tuam and then back to the Sacred Heart School in Westport for her Leaving Certificate. Mary Jo had very fond memories of all her schooldays and wonderful pals.
On finishing her education, Mary Jo returned home and started a very successful career with the O’Connor Supermarket chain and met lots of wonderful people through her work in O’Connor Fashions for many years.
In recent years her time was spent caring for her mother Josephine and attending to her garden and her dear pet dog Daisy who meant so much to her.
Mary Jo had a great sense of fun and a sharp wit and intellect that lent itself to greeting everyone on a first name basis. Mary Jo enjoyed the banter every week and had the pleasure of meeting some of her friends regularly as she did her weekly shopping.
Mary Jo always saw the best in people and never intentionally offended anyone. Mary Joe was young at heart, open-minded and always showed tremendoue support for people’s feelings or troubles of any kind.
Over the years Mary Jo loved the social life and had tremendous memories of very happy times during wonderful holidays both at home and abroad. Mary Jo was a kind, loving, caring, sensitive, honest, generous fun-loving and determined young lady.
On her final day in this life she had lots of plans for Spring cleaning and garden maintenance but sadly she slipped away in a peaceful manner in the privacy of her own home. This is the way she would have wanted it as she didn’t like hospitals and was very relucant to attend for any medical interventions or appointments.
Mary Jo will be sadly missed by her Uncle Peter Chambers (Kilbride, Newport), Frank Chambers (London), Noreen and Ann (London), the Chambers, Duffy, Ronan and the O’Kelly families aunts-in-law, cousins, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.
A cortege representative of all sections of the community accompanied her removal from McGing’s Funeral Home, Westport, to St Brendan’s Church, Myna, where Fr Jim Walsh, PP, officiated at the reception ceremony.
The concelebrants of her Funeral Mass were Fr Jim Walsh and Fr Atty Devine. the lessons and prayers of the faithful were read by her many cousins and friends. The funeral liturgy was beautifully enhanced by the singing of the church choir, with an appropriate lament played by Sean Lavin.
In the Mass homily Fr Jim Walsh paid tribute to Mary Jo for her many Christian qualities, her great dedication to her extended family, neighbour, wider community and her many friends.
As a believer in the Resurrection of Christ she was now reunited with her parents Jack and Josephine in her heavenly home. A short tribute was given by her cousin Nicholas O’Kelly.
Mary Joe was paid to rest in the family grave in Myna Cemetery. May she have peaceful rest. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam dilís.
