Mayo hospital apologise to patients after staff shortages delay surgeries

Some patients had to wait days for surgery after staff in theatre services phoned in sick
Mayo University Hospital management have apologised to patients whose surgery had to be delayed during the week due to a storage of staff in theatre services.
A number of patients who presented to Mayo University Hospital this week having suffered broken bones and trauma were informed by medics that their surgery to repair the damage could not go ahead as planned due to a shortage of staff.
One patient who presented to the Emergency Department of the hospital on Tuesday after breaking his leg following a fall on Croagh Patrick had to wait until this morning (Friday) before his surgery could take place.
In a statement to the Mayo News, Mayo University University Hospital admitted that there were a number of staff absences in theatre services due to sick leave and as a result critically ill patients were given priority.
They added that they hope that the backlog will be addressed today and apologised to the patients who had to wait for their surgery.
“Mayo University Hospital has experienced a significant increase in trauma presentations this week, coinciding with a number of staff absences in theatre services due to sick leave. As a result, clinical teams have had to prioritise the most urgent and critically ill patients to ensure they receive timely treatment.
“Despite every effort to minimise disruption, some trauma patients have experienced longer wait times for surgery than would normally be expected. The hospital recognises the impact this can have on patients and their families and sincerely apologises to those affected by these delays.
“The hospital expects that all outstanding trauma and emergency cases will be addressed today. Patients are being kept informed of their anticipated surgery times, and updates are being provided directly to those affected,” the statement read.
