Mayo Male Voice Choir settles on Spring Concert venue

JOINING FORCES Tenor SeΡn Costello will join the MMVC for its Spring Concert this year.

Due to the very sad demise of the Welcome Inn Hotel, Mayo Male Voice Choir committee members were left scratching their heads as to where to find a venue at short notice for their annual Spring Concert. After much deliberation and a change of date, the choir has plumped for Breaffy House Hotel on Thursday, April 28, at 8pm.

This year will see a 1916 flavour to some of the choir’s new repertoire. MMVC members, David Loring and Joseph Garvey have taken the beautiful and moving ‘Grace’ and arranged it especially for the choir. New songs getting their first outing include ‘Jug of Punch’ and ‘Worried Man Blues’. A favourite of sadly missed founder member Michael Basquille, ‘Rest of the World Goes By’, is also included.

Renowned tenor SeΡn Costello will join the choir for the concert this year. It has been several years since SeΡn has sung with MMVC, and he is guaranteed to entertain on the night whether plucking songs from his Josef Locke repertoire or from his vast catalogue of other greats.

The Garvey brothers, James and Joseph, both valuable choir members, will also be emerging from the choir ranks to take the spotlight. James’s amazing vocal (with harmonies provided by Joseph) on ‘Bridge Over Troubled Waters’ was the absolute highlight of last year’s concert. Who knows what they will come up with this year.

The inimitable Frank Forde will play the role of compere at the concert for the first time.

The choir’s next outing is in Louisburgh this Friday, April 15, where they will participate in a fundraiser for Louisburgh Order of Malta.

Tickets (€15 each) for the MMVC Spring Concert on April 28 are available from any choir member, from reception in Breaffy House Hotel or at the door on the night.
