Mayo Road Safety Office has launched a new pedestrian crossing leaflet providing information and advice for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists on the safe use of Pedestrian Crossings

Many people cross the road several times a day, usually at a safe and convenient point, but a Pedestrian Crossing should always be used where available, particularly at locations where there is a high volume of traffic or a larger number of pedestrians.

Mayo Road Safety Office has launched a new pedestrian crossing leaflet providing information and advice for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists on the safe use of Pedestrian Crossings.

The leaflet highlights key safety messages, including stopping before crossing, looking carefully in both directions, listening for approaching traffic, waiting for vehicles to stop and remaining alert while crossing. It also reminds motorists of their responsibility to slow down, remain vigilant and give pedestrians the time and space they need to cross safely.

Launching the leaflet outside Castlebar National School reinforces the importance of road safety within the school community and the need for a shared commitment to protecting young pedestrians and cyclists on their daily journeys to and from school.

Speaking at the launch, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr John Caulfield, said: “The safety of our children on the roads is a responsibility we all share. Pedestrian crossings play a vital role in helping people cross roads safely but it is important that both pedestrians and motorists understand their responsibilities.”

Mayo Road Safety Officer, Frances Mitchell said: “We hope this leaflet will provide useful, practical advice for all road users and encourage everyone to make safer choices around our schools and throughout our communities. I am encouraging all parents and guardians to discuss the leaflet’s key messages with their children and to lead by example when crossing roads.”

Director of Services, Mayo County Council, Ms. Siofra Kilcullen stated: “This new pedestrian crossing leaflet is an important initiative to promote awareness, encourage safe behaviour and remind both pedestrians and motorists of their responsibilities on the road.”

This launch forms part of ongoing efforts to promote road safety awareness throughout County Mayo and to help make roads safe for everyone. For further information, visit www.mayo.ie.
