Mayo to come together to commemorate 45th anniversary of National Hunger Strike

The 45th anniversary of the National Hunger Strike Commemoration will be launched next week in Castlebar
Plans for the 45th Anniversary National Hunger Strike Commemoration will be officially launched at a press event in Castlebar next week ahead of the national ceremony in Ballina later this summer.
The launch, organised by Sinn Féin, will take place at 11am on Friday, 3 July, at The Travellers Friend Hotel, where details of this year’s programme of events will be unveiled.
Among those expected to attend the launch are former hunger striker Pat Sheehan MLA, George Stagg, brother of hunger striker Frank Stagg, Mayo Sinn Féin TD Rose Conway-Walsh, and Cllr Gerry Murray.
The National Hunger Strike Commemoration main event will be held in Ballina on Sunday, 30 August, marking the 45th anniversary of the 1981 Hunger Strike.
The event will commemorate the ten hunger strikers who died during the protest and reflect on the legacy of the 1981 Hunger Strike.
Speakers at the launch are expected to outline plans for the national commemoration.
