The death has taken place at St Fionnan’s Community Nursing Unit in Achill of Mr Michael James Moran, Fawnglas, Clare Island. He was aged 89 years and was a former postman on the island. He is mourned by his sisters, Ann (Clare Island), Hannah Scanlon (Belmullet) and Bridget Graham (Monaghan), nephews and nieces, cousins and friends. For many years, Michael James was a member of the Clare Island Development Association and spent a lot of his spare time working on a voluntary basis for the betterment of the island. He was a member of the organising committee of the Annual Clare Island Regatta and often acted as race starter for the event.

Removal was from Sweeney’s Funeral Home, Louisburgh to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Clare Island, where Fr Michael Mannion officiated at the reception ceremony. Fr Mannion was also the celebrant of Michael James’s Funeral Mass in which family members participated.

In his homily, Fr Mannion paid tribute to Michael James for his deep faith and the concern he had always shown for others throughout his life. He knew that anything he could do to improve the island would improve the quality of life for the people of the island. “He loved God through love of his neighbour,” said Fr Mannion. Michael John was laid to rest in the island cemetery. May he rest in peace
