Michael King (Mickie)
Cuilmore, Drummin
Michael King or ‘Mickie’ as he was better known, was born in Sheffrey in September 1929 to William and Mary King. Born into a family of eight, two of whom died at birth, Michael is predeceased by his sisters Mary Bridget and Sarah Mags, and brothers Anthony Joe and Johnny. His sister Annie is still alive.
Michael got his education at Drummin National School and got his first job with Kelly’s on the Octagon, Westport, at 17 years of age, delivering goods around the town such as bread and flour.
Two years later Michael took the boat to England where he had several jobs in different places, with companies like Wimpy Contractors, who even brought him on a contract to Canada, something which later, he would tell many stories of.
After 12 years Michael returned home where he met his beloved wife, Mary O’Malley from Derryherbert, and bought the Old School House and teachers residence and farm in Drummin. This was where Michael and Mary made their life together.
In 1963 they took over the running of the Post Office in Drummin, a job in those times which involved a lot of commitment, having the only phone in the area receiving and sending messages all over the world. They also looked after the farm and Michael also loved dealing in the buying and selling of sheep.
The couple were blessed with four children, two boys and two girls; Patricia, Tommy, John and Catherine. In 2000 Michael retired from the Post Office but continued to work hard on the farm, where he kept a keen interest until his recent passing.
Michael was a very outgoing man, visiting the local pub a few nights a week to socialise with his friends, telling stories and following current affairs, particularly farming and local issues.
Michael was also a wonderful father and family man, always wanting and giving the best for his family. He was also blessed with nine wonderful grandchildren.
During his Funeral Mass, family members took part in the ceremony, liturgy, readings, prayers of the faithful and brought offertory gifts and mementos of Michael’s life to the altar.
May his gentle soul rest in peace.
“You were a warm and loving, jolly man,
with a kind and gentle touch,
and we wanted you to remember,
that we loved you very, very much”
