Mollie Moran (Kenny)

Church Street, Westport

An Appreciation

Mollie has left us but many, many memories come flooding back of happy times spent in “The Lane”.

The door was always on the latch and we were greeted by “you’re welcome” - it didn’t matter if we hadn’t seen her for a week or two months - the welcome was genuine. No matter what time one called, she would drop what she was doing and sit down to talk over tea or something considerably stronger! Sometimes it was like the Marie Celeste - the radio on, the table set but no sign of Mollie, who had gone to the shop, accompanied by either Prince or Rover, the family dogs.

There were all sorts of animals over the years, and even a pet lamb called Billy in Mollie’s younger days. No child ever left her home empty-handed and Mollie needed no pattern to knit the many Fairisle jumpers, caps and gloves which were given as presents, not to mention the new shoes and coats.

We enjoyed listening to stories about Mollie’s young days - falling into the river and coming home to face the wrath of her mother, Agnes, as she was the apple of her father, Bernard’s eye.

The Kenny house was famous for its music sessions with Mollie’s father, Bernard, and her brothers playing. When it became the Moran home after Mollie’s marriage to Frank, that tradition was still carried on. Many great parties were held there, most recently Mollie’s last birthday party. Neighbours, friends and relations all gathered and the street rang out to the strains of Ramona and Lily Marlene.

We remember potato cakes dripping with butter and all the cousins being bundled into Frank’s Volkswagen and being brought for a spin to Chambers’ in Newport for ice cream.

Mollie thoroughly enjoyed the company of her eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, each having their own place in her heart.

Thanks for the memories, Mollie, you have been everything to everyone, but above all, a friend.

The curtain has fallen for the final time on the sing-songs. We are sure they will continue in another realm, as you are in good company, with Frank, Jonathan, your parents and brothers.

Suaimhneas síoraí, Mollie, after work well done.

Until we meet again,

- Rita and family
