Organic lamb finishing event 'From Farm to Fork’ to take place in Mayo

The Mayo event is set to highlight the success of host farmer Micheal Holmes, who entered organic farming in 2023.
Sheep farmers from across Mayo are being invited to attend a major organic lamb finishing event in Mulranny next month, where practical demonstrations, the latest research and industry expertise will be on display.
The first of three ‘From Farm to Fork’ Organic Lamb Finishing events will take place on Wednesday, August 5, at 6:30 pm on the farm of Micheal Holmes, Newfield, Mulranny, Westport (F28 FR50).
The Mayo event will highlight the success of host farmer Micheal Holmes, who entered organic farming in 2023. Farming a flock of predominantly Mayo Blackface and crossbred ewes, Micheal has adapted his system to meet organic standards despite challenges such as sourcing organic feed and weed control.
In 2025, he successfully finished all of his lambs organically, producing carcases in excess of 18kg for Irish Country Meats. Most of the lambs were finished on grass, with the remainder supplemented using organic concentrates and hay produced on the farm.
Micheal is a strong advocate of weighing and assessing lambs before sale, and organisers say the live demonstration will provide valuable practical advice for farmers regardless of whether they operate organic or conventional systems.
The events are supported by Teagasc, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Bord Bia, the Irish Organic Association, Organic Trust, the IFA, Irish Country Meats, the ICSA, Leitrim Organic Farmers Co-op, NOTS, OBLIG and the INHFA.
