Angus Hall of Uisce Éireann described the milestone as a major step forward for the Ballyhaunis project.
A significant upgrade of the Ballyhaunis Wastewater Treatment Plant has moved a step closer after Uisce Éireann submitted a planning application to Mayo County Council.
The proposed upgrades will increase the capacity of the plant from its current population equivalent (PE) of 4,000 to a PE of 6,600 once works are complete.
Welcoming the submission of the planning application, Angus Hall of Uisce Éireann described the milestone as a major step forward for the project.
“We are delighted to have reached the point of submitting our application for planning permission on this project,” he said.
“These upgrade works, once complete, will increase the capacity of the wastewater treatment plant in Ballyhaunis by over 50%.
“This will allow for an improved service for existing customers in Ballyhaunis, while also allowing for new development in the town in the years ahead. The upgrade will also help to safeguard the environment of the local area,” he added.
The planned works include upgrades to the plant inlet, mechanical and electrical improvements, and a range of ancillary works designed to support the expanded capacity.
According to Uisce Éireann, all construction activities will take place within the existing footprint of the treatment plant, meaning disruption to the local community is expected to be minimal. The facility will also remain fully operational throughout the construction period.
Subject to the necessary statutory approvals being secured, construction is expected to begin in mid-2027.
