Status Orange thunderstorm warning issued for Mayo as heatwave breaks

Met Éireann is advising people in Mayo to stay alert to changing conditions through the evening,
A Status Orange thunderstorm warning has been issued for Mayo, along with Galway and Roscommon, as the spell of sweltering weather that has gripped the country this week shows signs of breaking down.
Met Éireann's warning is valid from 4:56pm until 8pm this evening, and cautions that clusters of thunderstorms are expected in places, though not every area of the county will be affected.
The national forecaster has warned of a range of possible impacts, including localised flooding, hail damage, and difficult travelling conditions. Damage to utilities, including power, water, gas, and telecommunications, is also flagged as a risk, along with very gusty winds and lightning damage.
The warning comes after a week of exceptionally hot conditions across the country, with daytime temperatures exceeding 25 degrees and reaching as high as 30 degrees at times.
Motorists in particular are urged to take care, with surface water and poor visibility possible during any thundery downpours.
