Mayo County Council urges public to take precautions as temperatures could exceed 27°C

Mayo County Council has informed the public that a status yellow high temperature warning is in effect across the county until 9am on Friday, June 26, as unusually warm weather continues.

The warning comes as temperatures are expected to rise above 27°C in some areas, while overnight temperatures may remain above 15°C, creating an increased risk of heat-related illnesses.

The council is urging residents to take precautions during the warm spell, particularly older people, young children, those with underlying health conditions, and anyone working outdoors.

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat stress, dehydration and other health issues. Warm nights may also make it difficult for people to cool down and recover from daytime heat.

Mayo County Council has also highlighted an increased risk of forest and wildfire incidents during the current dry and hot conditions.

Further health and safety guidance is available from the HSE, with information on staying safe during periods of high temperatures and protecting against heat-related illness.
