Ulick McDonnell
Roundfort
Ulick McDonnell, Roundfort. THE death took place last week of Ulick McDonnell, Kilglasson, Roundfort. He was aged 83 and a was a highly respected member of the local rural community.
Ulick was a gentle soul who lived all his life in the area. Together with his brother Jimmy, he took care of the family home and land.
He was especially noted for his kindness to animals and fowl and anything under his care was never the worse for it. His compassionate nature was ever to the fore and he had a great love for nature and the beauty of the environment.
Ulick had a wonderful knowledge of his locality and its people and was a gifted historian. He could go back generations when it came to putting together family relations and connections.
Some years ago, Ulick underwent two major operations. But his positive nature and unflinching spirit saw him overcome such adversity and he continued to do the things that were important to him all along. On his specially powered wheelchair, he would travel to Mass in nearby Roundfort Church, and could often be seen making that journey.
All who knew him had a good time for Ulick as he was a man with an innate sense of decency who went gently about his daily life and who was always a kind and pleasant neighbour.
Removal took place from Cummins’s Funeral Home in Ballinrobe to Roundfort Church with burial in the local cemetery following Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr Michael Molloy, PP. In his homily, Fr Michael recalled many of the noble traits that endeared Ulick to the community at large.
Ulick, who was predeceased by his brothers Jimmy and Michael, is survived by his brothers John Joe (Ballymartin) and Alphonsus (Fonsie)(Fountainhill), his sister Teresa McTigue (Claremorris), nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. - MC.
