Castlebar training centre thanks community for strong support as summer vegetable market returns this week

A successful Open Day at the HSE Windfalls Rural Training Centre in Castlebar has raised €1,325 for Sunflower Children’s Hospice, following strong support from the local community.

Held recently at the centre, the event attracted a large number of visitors who enjoyed guided access to the facility’s gardens while learning more about the work being carried out by service users and staff.

The fundraiser generated €1,325 for Sunflower Children’s Hospice, with organisers expressing gratitude to everyone who attended and contributed to the event.

Hugh Rainey, Centre Manager at Windfalls, thanked the public for their generosity and support.

“We are delighted with the support received from the public and sincerely thank everyone for their generosity towards Sunflower Children’s Hospice,” he said. “It was wonderful to see so many people visit the centre and enjoy the day.”

The HSE Windfalls Rural Training Centre forms part of Mayo Mental Health Services’ Social Inclusion Programme and provides a non-medical environment where service users are supported in their recovery journey.

The centre focuses on helping individuals develop independence, skills and interests while promoting social inclusion and wellbeing. Activities include gardening, horticulture, arts and crafts, catering and nature-based programmes.

Windfalls has become well known locally for its gardens and community engagement initiatives, with the centre placing a strong emphasis on the therapeutic benefits of working outdoors and connecting with nature.

Members of the public can continue to visit the gardens throughout the summer, with Windfalls open Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm.

The centre is also preparing for the return of its popular Summer Vegetable Market, which begins on Thursday, June 18, at 9am and will continue every Thursday throughout the season.

Organisers are encouraging the public to call in, support the market and learn more about the valuable work being undertaken at the Castlebar facility.
