ART EXHIBITION: An artistic response to the 19th century social reformer and Irish female emigrant champion Charlotte Grace O’Brien, will open at the Red Door Gallery, The Square, Newcastle West on March 14 at 8pm. It will include works in both fine art and design by the Artistic Co-operative – limerick Lady Associates in association with Newcastle West Arts. It promises to be a varied and informing experience regarding this inimitable woman. She was born locally at Cahermoyle and was a later resident of Foynes – while socially active in Cobh and New York. Her legacy of the O’Brien Emigrant Home and Our Lady of the Rosary Mission, New York, are testament to her enduring strength of purpose and character. Though afflicted by a pronounced hearing loss at a young age, her sense of endeavour and love of country, would inspire and strengthen her resolve, in the face of adversity – both at home and abroad – where she was obliged to frequently speak in public. Her words and thoughts on emigration, as recorded, are as prescient today as they were in 1881. The official opening will be performed by Ms Vicki Nash, Chairperson of Newcastle West Arts – with an after-party at the centrally located Shamrock Bar. The exhibition runs from March 14 to Saturday, March 30 – open Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 5pm.
