A heartfelt fundraiser has been launched in support of Hugh O'Neill, a beloved member of the Annagasan community, who has been living with an incurable stage 4 brain tumour for over two and a half years.

Hugh, described by friends as “one of the kindest, most generous souls you could ever hope to meet”, has inspired those around him with his strength, courage, and unfailing good humour in the face of devastating news. His close friend, Jenny Fagan, who has known Hugh for nearly two decades, is spearheading the fundraising effort to help him and his devoted wife, Niamh, navigate the many challenges they now face.

Since his diagnosis, Hugh’s health has deteriorated significantly, and he has become increasingly dependent on Niamh, who has been by his side every step of the way. Niamh has had to reduce her working hours and will soon step back from work entirely to provide the care he needs.

“Hugh is the kind of person who would give his last penny if it meant helping someone else – the kind of soul who lifts everyone around him.” Jenny said. “ Now, it’s our turn to lift him.”

Funds raised will go towards vital home modifications to make their house wheelchair-accessible, including a new entrance and other adjustments to support Hugh’s changing needs. An electric wheelchair and a wheelchair-accessible vehicle are also urgently needed, as Niamh has developed back problems from pushing Hugh’s wheelchair and lifting it in and out of the car.

“This fundraiser is about giving Hugh, Niamh, and their loved ones the chance to create as many beautiful memories together as possible,” Jenny added. “Whether it's for special days out, travel, or simply giving them the time and space to be together, every donation – no matter the size – will make a meaningful difference.”

The fundraiser has so far raised over €8k with a goal of €9k. Anyone wishing to donate can do so via the GoFundMe page set up by Jenny Fagan.
