Minister McEntee confirmed that the project is still at Stage 2b of the architectural planning process

Fianna Fáil Senator for Louth and East Meath, Alison Comyn, has expressed disappointment at the continued lack of progress on the construction of the Louth and Meath Education and Training Board (LMETB) headquarters in Drogheda, following a recent response from Minister for Justice Helen McEntee.

Senator Comyn, who has raised the matter in the Seanad, said the most recent update from the Minister suggests that the project remains stalled, with no clear timeframe for delivery.

“After more than a decade since this project was first announced, and three years since the Drogheda location was reconfirmed, it is very concerning that we are still at the design stage, with no planning permission secured and no definitive timeline in place,” Senator Comyn said. “This is a long-awaited development for Drogheda and clarity is now urgently needed.”

Minister McEntee confirmed that the project is still at Stage 2b of the architectural planning process, which involves statutory approvals and preparation of tender documents. Senator Comyn said it is disappointing that this particular project has not yet moved forward.

“This project represents more than just a new building, it’s a significant commitment to the region, as outlined in the Education and Training Boards Act of 2013. It’s important that the Government follows through on its promises to the people of Drogheda.”

Over €300,000 has already been spent on feasibility studies and consultations, yet physical works on the proposed site at St. Oliver’s Community College on Rathmullan Road have not yet commenced.

“I understand that these processes take time, but the delays have gone on for far too long. I would urge the Department to engage directly with LMETB and to provide whatever support is necessary to bring this important development to fruition.”

Following a recent meeting with Senator Comyn, LMETB CEO Martin O’Brien said: “LMETB is looking forward to delivering the headquarters building in Drogheda and see it as necessary to provide for the administration and delivery of training in a cohesive way. LMETB is still absolutely committed to Drogheda as the ideal location for the headquarters and the project is 100% ready to be delivered once Department of Education funding is provided.”

“The people of Drogheda have waited patiently, and it is time for real progress to be made. I will continue to raise this matter with the Minister for Education and the Taoiseach to ensure this project gets the attention it deserves.”
