A 26 year old man who punched a garda behind his left ear, after the defendant was seen yelling at his mother, in breach of a protection order, has been sentenced to four months at Dundalk District Court.

Judge Eirinn McKiernan heard that incident happened on the night of April 7th last, and four days later the accused, who cannot be named due to reporting restrictions, and who appeared in custody, was also discovered in the back garden of his mother’s home, after she phoned gardaí saying she feared her son was going to her house.

The court heard he had 24 previous convictions.

The defence solicitor asked for credit for his client’s early guilty pleas, and explained that at the time he was having difficulty with tablets, cocaine and alcohol, but he has been drug-free for the last month.
