Dundalk Municipal District January meeting

A number of issues were discussed at the Dundalk Municipal District January meeting, including a call for action on clothes bins in Dundalk; appeal for action on dumping in estates; calls for extra gritting routes; solution sought to Chapel St congestion; and fears for Louth's road works programme.

Here are some of the other issues raised at the January meeting:

In response to a query from Cllr Marianne Butler, councillors were told at the January meeting that Louth County Council hopes this year, to exceed the 200 homes it retrofitted in 2023, should adequate funding be allocated.

Cllr Andrea McKevitt requested that the Council launches a media campaign ahead of lambing season, reminding dog owners of the potential dangers to sheep.

Cllr Edel Corrigan raised the works that had taken place at the junction of Castletown Road and Patrick Street, highlighting the condition in which it had been left the previous weekend and concerns over public safety. Senior Engineer Paddy Connolly said he would look into the matter to find out more.

Cllr Tomás Sharkey commended the Council for the work it has carried out promoting the electoral register in several languages, and condemned the racist abuse posted on Twitter in relation to them.

Cllr John Reilly asked that the Council look at the road markings at the bus stop at McEntee Avenue in the town asking if it is an official bus stop. Senior Engineer Paddy Connolly said he would look into the matter.

Cllr Maeve Yore enquired about footpath repairs in areas including outside Greenacres on the Avenue Road. Cllr Yore also sought a list and approximate timeframe on works that would be done.

Senior Engineer Paddy Connolly replied however, to say that just works on specific areas wouldn't be taking place, due to the lack of funds available to the Council.

Cllr Seán Kelly raised the matter of blocked drains in the town, saying that a contractor had been engaged to clear drains before Christmas but quite a number had not been done as cars were blocking them.

As a result, recent rains had led to localised flooding in some areas. Cllr Kelly requested that the contractor be brought back to finish the job.
