Louth councillor calls for investment in travel infrastructure

Cllr Minogue says Apple tax windfall should be used to modernise travel infrastructure
Louth's Cllr Dolores Minogue has said that the €14 billion tax windfall from Apple should be used to modernise Ireland's travel infrastructure, "to make every corner of Ireland more accessible".
In comments to the Dundalk Democrat, Cllr Minogue said that "investing in our travel infrastructure" is "an opportunity we can't afford to miss", following the €14 billion tax windfall Ireland is to receive following the recent Apple tax judgment.
The Ardee councillor said that "when you visit other European countries, you can’t help but admire their travel systems. These systems are designed for everyone, regardless of age or physical ability. Investing in similar infrastructure here in Ireland would transform how we move through our cities, towns, and countryside."
She continued: "A well-planned, modern travel system would make every corner of Ireland more accessible. It would boost tourism by making it easier for visitors to explore our stunning landscapes and vibrant towns. Better travel options would also benefit education, health, and local communities.
"With improved infrastructure, Ireland would become an even more attractive destination. Tourism would thrive, bringing more spending into local economies and creating jobs across the country.
"By using the Apple tax windfall to modernise our travel infrastructure, we can ensure a brighter, more connected future for Ireland. A future that benefits everyone, locals and visitors alike."
Cllr Minogue added: "When the local economy thrives, it generates increased revenue through local businesses, which can then be reinvested into essential community services such as sports programs, educational initiatives, healthcare, and infrastructure development.
"This creates a positive feedback loop where a healthy economy enhances the quality of life, making the community more vibrant, cohesive, and sustainable. These improvements attract more investment and talent, further boosting economic and social well-being."
Cllr Minogue concluded by sayin that improving our travel infrastructure will help "improve our cities, towns and villages."
