Louth County Council refuses planning for 31 new homes in Dromiskin

Proposed development included the widening of Model Farm Road
Louth County Council has refused planning permission this week for 31 new homes in Dromiskin.
Padraig Hand applied to the local planning authority in October for planning permission for the development at Model Farm Road, Dromiskin, seeking permission for the construction of 31 dwellings on a site of approximately 1.32 hectares.
The proposed 31 homes consist of nine, semi-detached, four bed, two storey houses; 19 semi-detached, three bed, two storey houses; and three detached, four bed, two storey houses. The planned development includes the widening of the existing public Model Farm Road.
The planning application also provides for items including the provision of a new vehicular entrances and access roads, public open & play spaces, in curtilage parking areas, footpaths, and all associated / ancillary landscaping and site development works.
Louth County Council refused planning permission for the development on five grounds. Among the reasons it gave, it said that:
"It is considered that the proposed development by reason of the loss of the entire roadside boundary comprising mature trees and hedgerow and stone pillars which is listed as ‘Significant Trees and Hedgerow’ in the Plan (Dromiskin Composite Map) substandard access arrangements and road layout, peripheral open space, poor relationship with the adjoining public open space and amenities, would result in a poorly configured layout that would result in a substandard arrangement for future occupants and a lost opportunity to provide for passive surveillance and sense of safety for users of the adjoining open space (as zoned H1 Open Space in the Plan.)"
