A 70 year old man who was caught travelling at 175kph on the M1 motorway has avoided a driving ban after completing a driver's awareness course as directed.

Dundalk district court had previously been told eight of his employees could lose their jobs if Sean Cooney of Fairview, Warrenpoint, Co. Down was disqualified from driving.

He was originally charged with dangerous driving arising out of the incident at Braganstown shortly before 10.30pm on March 12th last and Judge Nicola Andrews initially refused a Defence request to convict him of the lesser charge of careless driving.

The case was put back for a €5,000 donation to the court fund and to enable the defendant to complete a drivers awareness course, with the judge saying “I'll consider reducing that down” but warned him that if he stands back before her again “a disqualification is going to be the least of your worries”.

When the case was called last Wednesday the Defence confirmed Mr Cooney had done the course and the payment had been made.

Judge Andrews reduced the charge to careless driving and imposed a €500 fine.
