Mannan Castle Seniors

In the final seniors competition before Seniors Captain Denis Murphy's Prize day a large turnout of golfers sought to sharpen their game ahead of the big day. Testing weather conditions kept the scores in check and there were no runaway winners in the categories.

Gerry Corbally managed to record the best score of the day in winning category 4 with 26 points. for the 13 holes. He played steady golf with only one hole where he failed to score.

In Category 1 seniors stalwart Jimmy McMahon made a welcome return to the winners enclosure with 25 points. Again steady golf was the order of the day with Jimmy scoring on every hole.

It was a different matter in Category 2 where Joe Mullen had a more erratic round but still carded 25 points to win the category. Two no scores and two one points were offset by five three pointers.

In Category 3 Peter Burns was the winner with 24 points. Despite a bit of a wobble in the middle of his round an excellent 14 points for his last six holes ensured victory.

Senior 13 Hole Competition Tuesday 20th August - Category 1: Jimmy McMahon (17) 25pts, Category 2: Joe Mullen (21) 25pts, Category 3: Peter Burns (23) 24pts, Category 4: Gerry Corbally (28) 26pts.

Mannan Castle Ladies

Lady Captain’s Day - The winner of the 2024 Lady Captain's Prize at Mannan Castle Golf Club is Margaret Crawley. Margaret was out in the last group of the day, playing in a two ball following three balls, a recipe for disaster for many, but not for this level headed golfer.

Margaret played extremely steady golf parring four holes, recording 39pts despite not scoring on two holes on the back nine. This year's Captain's Prize was a one day event, contested over 18 holes.

There were many beautiful prizes awarded for a variety of categories, but first prize was literally a work of art, a beautiful painting of our signature 3rd hole by renowned local artist Kate Beagan.

In second place was a new member Pauline Jones who wasn’t eligible to win first prize, but Pauline scored a whooping 43 points, playing off 46. Hopefully this win will give Pauline the push she needs to play more weekly competitions.

Best gross of the day was our lowest handicapper Louise Hanratty, who inspires us all. In third place was a lady who strikes the ball further than most, Noreen Murphy. Congratulations to all our prize winners, it was great to see so many of our new golfers playing and taking home prizes.

Lady Captain Carol thanked her committee, her family and friends and there was no doubt she enjoyed her day which included afternoon tea in the Cashel Room, where she greeted guests. Out on the course, golfers were able to enjoy an ice cream treat at the turn.

The lovely evening meal buffet was prepared and served by Michelle and her team at The Scullery and the tables were dressed by the Parlour Event in a slightly retro theme.

Of course, the Lady Captain loves to dance, and she rounded off the evening dancing the night away with husband Jimmy and the other ladies to the music by Paddy Byrne from The Last Word.

Weekly Competition

In this week's Women's competition, scoring was difficult on a day of unusually challenging conditions for August. However, Geraldine Finnegan managed to bring some of her best golf, in particular going very strong in the middle of the round.

Six pars, including a couple of the par 5's, pushed her final total to 35 points to win with some room to spare.

Rita O'Loughlin recovered from a couple of blips on the front nine to finish strongly on the back nine to take second place on countback from Cepta Maddick who made every hole count with both finishing with 33 points.

Reflecting the tricky conditions, just two birdies on par 3's recorded in the field but an excellent birdie on the 14th too. Congratulations to all the winners and everyone who took part.

Many thanks to this week's kind sponsor KKN Transport, a local transport company providing global logistics solutions. https://www.kkn-solutions.com/
