New house commencements fell significantly in Louth in June compared to previous months, latest government data shows

Figures released by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage show that there was a significant fall in June in the number of new homes on which construction began, compared to both the previous month, and the same month last year.

Work commenced on 13 new homes in Louth in June. This is down from 49 in May, and also down from 94 in June 2025. Of the 13 in June, eight were one off units; three were scheme units; and two were apartments.

In the first six months of this year, work began on 202 new homes in Louth, up from 125 in the first six months of last year.

Nationally, work commenced on 2,826 new homes in June, up from 2,099 in May, and also up on 1,381 in June of last year.

A total of 15,946 new homes have been commenced since the beginning of the year, up from the 6,414 units that were commenced in first half of 2025.

Of the 2,826 units commenced in June, 582 (21%) are scheme dwellings, 1,765 (62%) are apartments and 479 (17%) are for one-off units.

A total of 39% (1,074 units) were in the four Dublin local authorities. By Local Authority, the most units commenced were in Dublin City (789), followed by Cork City (328) and Meath County (262).

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, welcomed the latest figures, commenting: “I have been driving on to ensure delivery of homes as a matter of serious urgency. It is once again genuinely encouraging to see this strong momentum in the number of new homes being built throughout the country. We want to see this continuing at pace.

“While these positive figures reflect the hard work we have managed to achieve under our Housing Action Plan, I am not taking anything for granted here.

“I am being ambitious, and we have to be. As Minister, I use every lever available to me to continue the progress to date. People need to see these houses getting up and people need to see the keys in their hands.
