Plans underway to convert iconic Market Square building in Dundalk to apartments

Planning permission sought from Louth County Council
Plans are underway to redevelop the former Ulster Bank at the Market Square in Dundalk, with a planning application lodged in recent days with Louth County Council.
Peadar Ó Siail has applied for planning permission for the change of use at first and second floor levels of 100 Clanbrassil Street, Dundalk, from bank/financial institution to residential.
The proposed residential development comprises six one-bed apartments, with three on each floor. The planning application also provides for the replacement of a window with a new door to Clanbrassil Street, and all other site associated development works.
100 Clanbrassil Street in Dundalk is a protected structure. In Louth County Council's Record of Protected Structures, it describes the building as a "Corner-sited attached three-bay three-storey red brick and stone bank, built c. 1890. Extended to west".
In its appraisal of the building, it says that "this fine building forms a landmark within the town. Designed by Vincent Craig, the contrasting use of red brick and sandstone with granite makes for an appealing structure."
A decision is due from Louth County Council on the planning application, which is at a pre-validation stage, by 18 June, with submissions due by 28 May 2026.
