John O'Neill Sand & Gravel Division 3A

OLIVER PLUNKETTS 1-11

JOHN MITCHELS 1-5

Oliver Plunketts remain level with O’Connells at the top of Division 3A thanks to this six-point win over John Mitchels in Ballybailie on Saturday.

A dominant performance from the Oliver Plunketts saw them inflict a second defeat on the same opposition in five days. Following on from Tuesday night’s one point win in Mell, a tight game was anticipated but the Plunketts were fully deserving of their victory.

The Drogheda side started strongly and hit the first three points before the Mitchels responded through a John Gallagher point. The game was much more open than the game a few days previous and it was the Plunketts who controlled the majority of the half.

They kicked another two points before the Mitchels responded through another Gallagher point and visitors closed the half out with two more to leave the half time score 0-7 to 0-2.

The second period continued in similar fashion with the Plunketts stretching their lead despite a Mitchels response through Andrew Bingham and John Gallagher points.

The Plunketts finished the game as a contest with a Kristian Nolan goal and Sean Callaghan points which made sure of the result before a well taken Stephen Bingham point and a late John Gallagher goal closed the gap.

NH FIONNBARRA 0-5

O’Connells got their second win in a week over their neighbours Naomh Fionnbarra when they had 13 points to spare in Ballygassan on Saturday night.

Robert Quigley got the scoring under way with a brace of points and another from Jackie Agnew had their side three in front after five minutes. The Bellingham side went five up after two frees converted by Naill Conlon and a minute later the home side got their first point of the game from Ronan Callaghan.

Conlon added two more frees to his team’s tally to leave the score 0-7 to 0-1 after 25 minutes. The Togher side had their best spell of the game in the last five minutes of the half when they landed the next three points two from Adam Hanratty and the other from Chris McGlynn.

Quigley got the last point of the half to leave the score at the break 0-8 to 0-4. The second half continued much in the way of the first and points from Bernard Osborne and Quigley increased the lead to six points.

The home side were guilty of a plethora of missed chances both from play and more so from free kicks that would have made the scoreboard read a lot closer.

O’Connells got the next four points, one from Conor Culligan and the other three from Conlon. Substitute Jack Regan got the home side’s first and only point of the second half and the visitors finished the game with the next four points from Agnew, Emmet Byrne and two from Quigley.

GLYDE RANGERS 1-7

NA PIARSAIGH BLACKROCK 0-10

Na Piarsaigh picked up their first point of the season when they struck late to claim a draw in Tallanstown on Saturday night.

Glyde Rangers appeared to be on course for victory when a goal from Leigh Byrne gave them the advantage heading into the closing stages.

However, a long range free from the visitors wasn’t dealt with and bounced over the bar for the equaliser. The teams couldn’t be separated at the end of a cagey first half and they turned around level at five points apiece.

Tadhg Kellett claimed three points for Glyde and Ciaran Sheridan added two but it looked as if Byrne’s goal would be decisive. However, a brace apiece from Mark O’Hare, Ciaran Murphy and Robert Murphy along with three from Jamie Fealy saw the visitors earn a share of the spoils.

NAOMH MALACHI 2-13

SEAN MCDERMOTTS 3-8

Naomh Malachi made it four wins on the trot in Division 3B with an excellent victory at home over a Sean McDermotts side that won during the week.

Collie Rooney was the hero once again for the Courtbane side on Sunday morning with a sterling 1-2 in the opening half alone. That tally was enough for the hosts to lead by the minimum 1-5 to 1-4 at the turn.

In the second half Paudie Moley and Rooney continued to reign supreme with points that kept the scoreboard ticking despite McDermotts Niall Babington’s double salvo. Paul Burke capped his start with a crucial goal to push Mals to joint top of the table.

WOLFE TONES 3-8

ST NICHOLAS 1-9

Wolfe Tones secured the bragging rights at home on Saturday evening against Drogheda and championship rivals St. Nicholas.

The visitors have now lost two in five days having been the only side in the county to have a 100% record. What a difference a week makes. Garrett Cooney’s first half goal was decisive for the hosts as they led 1-3 to 0-4.

Despite Fionn Meagher finding the net for the Nicks, the narrative of the second half was about Tones full forward Alan Wilton.

The former Blues man netted the second, and the third goal for John Garvey’s was an own goal that Wilton would have probably scored anyway.

WOLFE TONES: Alan Sweeney; Danny Byrne, Reece Owens, Cathal Bergin; Taidhg Rock, Sam Kelly 0-1, Alan Fanning; Dean Haggins, Mark Healy 0-1; Sean Flanagan 0-1, Eoghan Brennan 0-4, Sean McQuail; Garrett Cooney 1-0, Alan Wilton 1-1, Dwayne Leavy.
