Gardai say the motorist had been drinking the night before but that the level of alcohol in their system was still above the legal limit the following day

A Clare motorist failed an early-morning roadside breath test after they were stopped at a joint garda/customs checkpoint in Crusheen.

Highlighting the detection on social media, gardai say the motorist had been drinking the night before but that the level of alcohol in their system was still above the legal limit the following day.

"Don't let the night before come into the morning after," stated the post.

"If you are drinking and planning on driving the next day, be aware you could still be over the limit. This is what happened the driver of this car who was recently arrested by our Roads Policing unit in Crusheen after failing a breath test," added the spokesperson.

Gardai say the driver was breath-tested during a joint checkpoint with the customs service which also saw a sample of diesel being taken from the white Volkswagen Golf.

Gardai have not disclosed if any proceedings have been initiated against the driver.
