Toys from through the ages displayed in fabulous Christmas window

THERE is a festive trip down memory lane in the city centre as a former shop window has been transformed into a wonderland of toys from yesteryear.

Historian Dr Paul O’Brien joined renowned ecclesiastical decorator Randel Hodkinson to fill the former Billy Higgins unit at Sarsfield Street with a treasure trove of toys, some of which date back to the 1890s.

The precious toys were borrowed from the attics and basements of Limerick families.

However, about 80% of the toys belong to Randel and his wife Lorna, who also worked on the display.

The dates of the toys range from about 1890 to 1990 and includes iconic pieces such as Mickey Mouse from the early 1920s, the first computer consoles from the 1970s and the Fisher Price toys from the 1980s.

One of the first Meccano sets is included.

A train set purchased in London in the 1930s, hockey sticks from the 1910s, quirky clockwork toys from the 1930s, and trikes from the 1960s all feature.
