Arthritis rehab classes starting in Limerick

A SIX week rehabilitation programme for individuals in Limerick living with osteoarthritis (OA) is starting at the end of the month, taking place in the UPMC Sports Medicine Clinics at TUS Moylish Campus, Limerick.
The 12 classes, carried out by UPMC Sports Medicine, will be led by physiotherapists who will guide attendees through a series of exercises that are designed to help reduce pain, increase flexibility and improve overall joint function.
Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis which affects millions of people worldwide, is defined as being a ‘wear and tear’ joint disease which occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones wears down over time and the underlying bone begin to change.
While the disease is manageable, people with OA - who tend to be most frequently affected in the hands, hips, and knees - struggle with mobility and flexibility on a daily basis.
Speaking about the new programme starting in Limerick, general manager of UPMC Sports Medicine, John Windle described it as a ‘great opportunity’ for those living with OA in the region to take part in.
“Those taking part in the classes will have the opportunity to meet and interact with others who are also living with osteoarthritis – This provides a great opportunity to share experiences and support each other in their journey to better health.”
Each participant will have a tailored exercise plan specific to each individual’s ability and this will be monitored throughout the programme with the hope of becoming stronger.
Classes will take place every Tuesday and Thursday at 11am from February 28, and the cost for 12 classes will be €120.
